Frequently Asked Questions



Q: Which standardized tests of English language proficiency does MCU-MI require?

A: Applicants must submit the result of the TOEFL or IELTS. The test date must be within two years of the intended term of enrollment to be considered valid. This requirement is waived for English native speakers.


Q: Is there a minimum required TOEFL or IELTS score?

A: A minimum score of TOEFL iBT 79/ TOEFL CBT 213/ TOEFL paper test 550 or IELTS 6.5 is required


Q: If I am applying to the Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and Chinese is not my native language, do I have to take any Chinese language proficiency standardized tests?

A: If your native language is not Chinese, you must pass the TOCFL Band B Level 4 or HSK 6.


Q: If I take the required tests more than once, which result does MCU-MI consider?

A: We consider your best test score.


Application Process

Q: How do I know that my application has been received?

A: We will send you an email acknowledging that we have received your application. Please allow up to two weeks for processing from the date materials are sent to us.


Q: Is there a checklist of required materials?

A: Yes, following are the required materials for applicants:


For U.S. Residents/Citizens and Non-U.S. Residents/Citizens:

1. Complete online application form for SVSU and MCU-MI, respectively. 

2. In English, a one-page Statement of Accomplishments and academic goals

3. A current resume

4. A photocopy of the highest degree/diploma

5. In sealed envelopes, an official copy of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts from any college or university where college credit was earned

6. Two letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes

7. A photocopy of the score report of Chinese Language proficiency: TOCFL Band B Level 4 or HSK 6 (Chinese native speakers are waived)


Additional Requirements for Non-U.S. Residents/Citizens:

1. A copy of the passport

2. Evidence of Financial Statement USD33,000.00 and up (original document)

3. A photocopy of the score report of English Language proficiency: TOEFL IBT 79/ TOEFL CBT 213/ TOEFL paper test 550 or IELTS 6.5 (English native speakers are waived)


Q: Who should write my recommendations?

A: Teachers or supervisors who have taught you in academic subjects or supervised you in the workplace typically will provide us with the most valuable information.


Q: What should I do if my contact information has changed since I submitted my application?

A: We can update your contact information if you send a request by e-mail from the e-mail address you provided on the application form. We may ask you some identifying information to verify your identity.


Financial Aid and Scholarship

Any students studying for a degree at MCU-MI and have an academic average of A or higher without any failed courses are eligible to apply for this scholarship. One student per academic year will be awarded US$2,000. In the event of multiple applicants fulfilling the academic average requirement, applicant's TOEFL score will be used as the tie-breaker.


Campus Life

Q: Is on-campus housing available?

A: Yes, our students enjoy the convenience to live in the Pine Grove Apartments on the SVSU campus.


Q: When is the earliest time for me to move into the campus apartment?

A: The Pine Grove Apartments is open for moving in near the end of August.


Q: Where will I take my meals?

A: Students of MCU-MI enjoy full access to the dining options on the campus of SVSU which includes: Marketplace Dinning Court at the Doan Center, Albert E’s Food Court, Starbucks, Einstein Brothers Bagels, and PAPA John’s


Military Service

Q. I have not served in the R.O.C. military and wish to apply for military draft deferral. What should I do?

A. For applicants who have not yet fulfilled their mandatory military service and wish to apply for military draft deferral, it is advised to complete the MCUMI online application before March 2018. The applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis to speed up the evaluation process. Once admission status is approved, applicants can take their student visas and related documents to the responsible local government unit to apply for military draft deferral.

If applicants have not taken TOEFL or IELIS, it is advised to first submit the application materials without the test result(s) for the preliminary evaluation process. Applicants who meet admission requirements will be issued a conditional offer and student visa in order to complete military draft deferral process. Then, applicants need only to provide an English test result that fulfills the stated standard before departing for the United States. Full admission status will be granted immediately.
